Dear Lisa: I Love Pattern But Every Time I Try It Looks Like a Mess

Dear Lisa,
I am obsessed with pattern. I pin it constantly. But every time I try to bring it into my home it looks chaotic and overwhelming. I end up taking it all out and going back to plain. What am I doing wrong?

Dear Pattern Lover,
You are not doing anything wrong. You are just skipping a step.
Pattern without scale consideration is chaos. Pattern with intention is art. The difference is in how you layer.
Start with one large scale pattern. Let it be the star. Then add one medium and one small. A stripe. A geometric. A textured solid. Each one a different visual weight. Each one giving the eye somewhere to travel and somewhere to rest.
You do not have a pattern problem. You have a scale problem. And scale is the easiest thing to fix once you know it exists.
Go back to those pins. Look at the rooms that work. I promise every single one of them is doing exactly this.
