Fear has an interesting way of finding us, sometimes when we least expect it. It can arrive with an unexpected bill, a difficult decision, concern for someone we love, or simply the uncertainty of not knowing what tomorrow holds. Before long, our minds are busy imagining every possible outcome, usually starting with the worst.

But I've never believed that all fear is bad. Some fear is healthy. It protects us from danger, encourages us to think carefully, and sometimes gives us the motivation to keep going when giving up seems easier. I think there's something valuable about fearing the regret of walking away from a dream before we've given it a fair chance.

The problem begins when fear stops guiding us and starts controlling us.

When Fear Takes Over

Fear can convince us that uncertainty means something terrible is coming. We hesitate, second-guess ourselves, and sometimes avoid opportunities because we're afraid of failing. Ironically, the very thing we think is protecting us can become what keeps us from growing.

I've learned that worry can feel remarkably productive. We convince ourselves that if we think about a problem long enough, we'll somehow prevent it from happening. But worrying about tomorrow doesn't give us control over it. It often just takes away the peace we could have enjoyed today.

And that's where faith makes such a difference.

Choosing Faith Without Denying Fear

I don't believe having faith means never being afraid. We're human, after all. We love deeply, we face disappointments, and we don't always understand why things happen the way they do.

But faith reminds me that I don't have to have every answer. I can take responsibility for what is within my control, pray about what isn't, and trust that God is present even when the outcome remains uncertain.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3 (NIV)

I love that this verse acknowledges fear rather than dismissing it. It doesn't say we must become fearless before trusting God. It reminds us that we can turn to Him right in the middle of our uncertainty.

And love plays an important role, too. Fear often grows from the things and people we care about most. But loving someone doesn't mean we can protect them from every difficulty, just as loving a dream doesn't mean we can guarantee its success.

We can care deeply without allowing fear to consume us.

A Little Prayer About Fear

Hello God, it's me.

I've been thinking about fear lately. Some of it makes sense, and some of it, well, I think I create all on my own.

I know fear isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it reminds me to be careful, and sometimes it gives me that little push I need to keep going. But other times, I let it get the best of me, worrying about things that haven't even happened.

So I'm asking for a little help knowing the difference.

Help me find the courage to face what scares me, the wisdom to recognize what deserves my attention, and the peace to let go of what I can't control.

And when I start trying to figure everything out myself, remind me that I don't have to. You're right here, even when I can't see what's coming next.

Thank You for loving me through all of it.

With love, faith, and in Jesus' name,

Amen.

Perhaps overcoming fear isn't about eliminating it altogether. Maybe it's about embracing the fears that help us grow, finding courage to overcome those that hold us back, and trusting God to guide us through both.

Because fear may be part of life, but it doesn't have to be the way we live it.
